The nudes were not the shy kind.
One: Kalpana standing before a hotel mirror he did not know, blouse off, petticoat at her waist, heavy breasts held in her own hands as if she were offering proof. The mole above the left collarbone was sharp in the flash. Another mole, smaller, sat on the underside of her left breast — a mark Keshav had never been meant to know, a mark only her husband should have seen in twenty years of dark rooms. Another still: she on the bed, thighs open, the dark of her sex visible, a third secret on the inner right thigh, oval, brown, close enough to the crease that a sari would hide it for a lifetime.
Non-nude photographs sat between them like a second language. Kalpana in a cotton sari at a corridor window, no smile, only the look of a woman who had already decided. Kalpana from behind, pallu gone, the line of her waist and the small sun-spot at the base of her spine — another husband-mark. Sexy, half-dressed frames: bindi still on, sindoor still in the parting, mouth open because Vivek had told her to open it for the lens.
Keshav’s stomach turned and his body did not care. He kept clicking.
Then he saw a folder titled friends.
He opened it because defence had already become hunger, and hunger had already become a kind of punishment.
Kavita.
Rohan’s mother. Fairer in the photographs than she looked in the gali steam of her kitchen. Telegram first: laughing voice-notes transcribed into text, then a picture of her throat and the gold chain she never removed. Nudes: Kavita on her back on a bed with a cheap headboard, breasts falling aside, a mole on the upper slope of the right breast that her blouse always covered, another low on her belly to the left of the navel, a third behind her left knee. She had sent a photograph with two fingers spreading herself, caption asking whether this was what he wanted before he arrived. Arousal pictures in a night-sari, no ghunghat, mouth shiny. Payment screenshots in her subfolder were not the student-girl amounts. They were five times those numbers. Cash counted twice. A note in the Word file: does not bargain. wants longer. wants to be told to stay.
Sunita.
Kabir’s mother. Darker skin, gold at the throat even in a hotel room. Her chat was shorter, colder, then suddenly explicit. She sent fewer photographs and the ones she sent were exact. Standing, sari open down the middle. A mole just inside the left areola. A thin scar-mole pair on the back of her right hip, the kind a husband would have mapped with his thumb in the dark and never spoken of. She had photographed her own mouth around nothing, waiting, as instruction. Her payments matched Kavita’s and Kalpana’s — the same high figure, the same line in Vivek’s file: premium. married. neighbouring houses. never same day as campus.
Keshav sat forward until the chair complained.
He opened videos.
Kalpana first.
The first clip was eleven minutes. Hotel curtains drawn. She came into frame already without the blouse, sari knotted at the waist like a woman who had practised the knot in a bathroom. Vivek did not call her anything from campus. He said her name once. She flinched as if the name in that room were a different woman.
