He sent three requests.
Kalpana’s fake ID first. Then the hidden profiles he had already scraped from her phone’s suggestions and from the way Kavita and Sunita existed in that same quiet circuit — different names, cropped faces, the same caution. He did not write a caption. He only appeared at their gates like a man who belonged on that side of the glass.
Lectures ended. Vivek did not come to the tree.
Rohan asked. Kabir waited near the bike stand. Keshav said nothing useful. In the afternoon Vivek answered a message with a paragraph that had the cleanliness of an exit.
Finals. PG. Isolation. No rides for a while. No flat. No extra talk. Studies first. He would see them after the papers.
It was almost true. It was also a door closing on three sons whose mothers he now knew by courtyard light. He did not say the birthday. He did not say sorry on this chat. He only stepped back into a syllabus and left the devotees in the shade.
By evening all three requests were accepted.
Keshav sat on his bed with the house settling under him — utensils, a television, Kalpana’s voice telling Sonam something ordinary — and opened the first thread.
He wrote like the grid he had built. Casual. A line about her photograph. A question that did not ask for a city. She answered after a pause that was not refusal. Kavita’s profile replied faster, a laugh in text. Sunita’s came last, short, testing. He kept all three conversations in the same temperature: here and there, night-normal, no suite, no fifty thousand, no cake. A man who had liked a picture. Women who had accepted a stranger because the stranger did not look like anyone who ate at their tables.
He slept with the three chats open like new rooms.
Vivek’s isolation had begun on campus. In the dark of the textile house a different apprenticeship had begun — not Bhaiya’s, not the 2BHK’s. A fake jaw, stolen quotes, three accepted names, and a first night of ordinary messages that were not ordinary at all.
The new era did not announce itself. It only delivered a blue tick and waited for tomorrow.
