Satyaboti Bandyopadhyay was married to a doctor of Kolkata and was happily spending her life but lost her husband in a tragic road accident after 31 years of marriage. She was devastated loosing her beloved husband at the age of 49 with her one married daughter and two grandchildren.

She couldn’t bear this unexpected happening and mourned his death almost everyday. Even at one point, she decided to finish her life, but remembering the innocent faces of her two grandchildren, she checked herself from taking such a drastic step.

And realising her acute distraught condition, her son-in-law Subhamoy, her daughter Sabitri persuaded her to come back at Chandannagar and stay with them. Without further delay her son-in-law rushed to Kolkata immediately to bring her back with a hope of saving her life. Yes, finally she returned to the Semi-urban town Chandannagar with him and started living with them.

After her husband’s death, her grandson Suman ( Subhamoy’s son ) and his parents ( Subhamoy & Sabitri ) were her real support. Suman liked to spend a lot of time with her as he was very much fond of hearing fairy tales from her. While listening stories from her, Suman tried to talk to her on various topics, make her laugh and happy.

Actually since his childhood, Suman and his Dida ( Grandmother ) were like friends despite their huge age difference. She had always helped him in studies whenever she’d come to Chandannagar, gossip together and they always liked each other’s company. As she was a brilliant woman and he was also well in studies, they always had a kind of appreciation for each other.

On the other hand, her Jamai ( Son-in-law ) and daughter always tried to support her mentally in such fateful time. And following the tragedy, she developed a stronger emotional attachment to her son-in-law as she treated him just like her own son. Given their lifelong closeness and his position as the eldest male of the family, he supported her heavily.

Sometimes he had to take her to bed when she fell asleep keeping her head on the dining table or on the sofa in the drawing room. It broke his heart immensely to see his chaste and respected mother-in-law in this state. She was once a radiant woman, full of life and energy, but now just after five days of her husband’s death, she was merely a shell of her former self.

Being a highly qualified Govt Clerk, he showed his huge responsibility not only in Office but also in his own family. He knew he would have to stay strong for her, but it felt like he was losing his respected mother-in-law too. Not being able to do anything good for her, he thought maybe giving her space for a few days would be better.
