When Wilbur realized that I wasn’t going to listen to their lies and bullshit, he decided to be the tough guy again, “Carter, use your head. I can ruin your career and run you out of town. Don’t be an idiot and think about it for a minute. When I become mayor, your career can take off, I can make you an important man in this town. But if you do this, I’ll destroy you and your family.”
That pissed me off, and I cold cocked him with the side of my gun, sending him to the floor onto his back in pain, “You want to threaten me again, go ahead, I dare you. You just destroyed my marriage and family. My little girl will be devastated to learn her mother is a whore and getting a divorce.”
It was hard not to laugh as I looked at the now naked man in handcuffs on his knees, threatening the giant figure in front of him. I reached down and made a point of shutting off my body camera. Then, with an expression that clearly scared Wilbur said, “Run me out town? I just put in an Officer Needs Assistance call. I can put a bullet in your head right now and place a knife in your hand and watch you bleed out on my carpet. I’ll tell them I caught you attacking my wife, then you turned on me, and that I had no choice but to put you down. You want to play games and threaten me? Answer me dumbass.”
He quickly answered, “No, I’m sorry.”
“Now, I won’t say this again. I don’t want to hear one word from either of you until we get to the bottom of this.”
Claire was pleading with her eyes, crying and sobbing as she sat there still naked, shaking from the cold. Everyone arrived at the same time. Two cars pulled up on my lawn and four officers approached the house with guns drawn. Ellen, from the news crew, had pulled up just in time to film the cars arriving and officers entering the house. She had her men follow behind the officers with the camera running getting a live action video and images of the crime scene. When Jonathan saw me holding the gun on Wilbur, he told me to stand down. I lowered my weapon and told them what I saw.
“As you know I came home early from an illness, and when I entered the house, I heard noises and believed my wife was being attacked. I found this man naked in my room and called in for assistance.”
Deputy Jonathan scanned the scene and back at me. What do you want to do here Sarge?”
Smiling, I said, “Bring him in for questioning for rape and assault. Oh, and add home invasion to the list.”
“Roger that, Sarge.” He turned to the other officers and told them to proceed. “Get some clothes on that man, read him his rights, and bring him down to the station.”
Deputy Jonathan then turned to me and asked “What about your wife? Do you want to get her to the hospital for a rape examination?”
“Not yet, I want her interviewed here first, and then we can bring her to the hospital.”
I saw Senior Deputy Mary Frank enter the room and I pulled her over to the side.
“Mary, Mr. Montague is being arrested for home invasion and possible rape charges. Yes, I know it probably won’t stick, but he will have a lot of explaining to do. But I need you to take Claire into the other room and interview her. I need you to get all the information about their affair, when it started, how often, as much as you can find out. Gain her confidence and let her know that you want to help her. Explain that it would be better if she interviewed at home, mention processional courtesy, instead of bringing her into the station for a statement. I want to know everything. Turn your body camera off and bring the notes to only me when you’re done. We can always question her again if needed. Understand?”
